Athens County OHIO area APRS Tracking Census Bureau TIGER Maps using 2006 Data For use within WnAPRS Ver. 2.8.4 Software: _______________________________________________________ If you are not already successfully running another version of WinAPRS, it is suggested that you use Version 2.8.4. The mapping support files in this directory are based on US Census Bureau "Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing" (TIGER) format. The files provided are 'compiled binaries' designed specifically for WinAPRS Ver. 2.8.4. They may work with other versions of WinAPRS as well, but have not been tested. They will likely NOT work with APRS software other than WinAPRS. These file names are referenced against "Federal Information Processing Standards" (FIPS) Codes for Ohio and Athens County. ** DO NOT ** rename any files beginning with TGR39, ST39 or CO39. The following two files are State Boundary definitions and County Boundary Definitions for all of Ohio, and need be installed only once regardless of how many Ohio Counties you wish to install. ST39_D00.BIN 22,884 04-30-07 5:32p ST39_D00.BIN CO39_D00.BIN 134,700 04-30-07 5:32p CO39_D00.BIN The actual Athens County data is a large file, and consumes significant working memory. You may wish to begin by installing only Athens County data, and then adding adjacent counties if/as you need them. APRS position reports will still properly display in other counties as well, however, detailed street-level map detail will not be available in those adjacent counties. INSTALLING THE FILES: ------------------------------------ Copy all Four .BIN files in this directory to the \TIGER\ folder located on your harddrive in the same directory where WINAPRS.EXE resides. Example: C:\WINAPRS\TIGER\ . This \TIGER folder should have already been created when you installed WinAPRS. DISPLAYING THESE TIGER MAPS in WinAPRS Ver. 2.8.4: -------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT: WinAPRS treats 'Tiger' Maps differently from 'regular' APRS Maps. As a result, the Athens County OH Map will NOT appear in the top tool bar 'MAPS' tab, so don't look for it there. (a) if the Full USA Tiger Map displays when you first start WinAPRS, then please skip to step (4) below. (b) if the Full USA Tiger Map does NOT display at WinAPRS startup, then begin with step (1) below: (1) pull down the top tool bar 'WINDOWS' tab. (2) select 'NEW TIGER MAP' (3) the full USA Tiger Map should display (4) Place the mouse cursor somewhere in northwest Ohio. Press and hold the RIGHT mouse button. Drag the mouse cursor southeast, creating a zoom-in 'resize' box. Release the RIGHT mouse button to execute the zoom-in resize. Repeat this process until you have zoomed into the Athens County area. You will need to zoom in fairly tightly on Athens County in order to trigger the street-level display. Loading progress of the various map elements will be shown in the WinAPRS status bar at the bottom of the screen above the Lat/Lon status bar. This process may take some time on an older computer with limited working memory. Census Bureau TIGER maps contain large amounts of useful 'underlying' data, including street address ranges, place names, water bodies, zip codes, etc. You will see much of this data displayed at the far right hand end of the WinAPRS lat/lon status bar as you move the mouse cursor around the map (often regardless of zoom level).
