VARA is a popular, proprietary, software modem that is used for transmitting and receiving data over amateur radio. It comes in both VHF and HF flavors, and it quite fast compared with packet. At some point, we may want to experiment locally with this mode, but would have to designate a separate 'calling frequency' not used by packet. You might be interested in these links.
